Former Springfield Golf Pro Sentenced for Tax and Bank Fraud

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – Former Springfield golf pro Kevin M. Kennedy has been sentenced to 13 months in prison for tax fraud and bank fraud. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Mark G. Mastroianni on Tuesday afternoon, putting an end to a yearslong saga that initially involved the city government. Kennedy was originally charged in 2018 with fraudulently obtaining a $150,000 loan from Chicopee Savings Bank by inflating the value of his Springfield home. The indictment also alleged that Kennedy failed to file federal income tax returns for three years, resulting in a tax loss of over $200,000 to the government. During Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, Kennedy’s attorney, Timothy Fleischer, acknowledged his client’s wrongdoing but asked for leniency, citing Kennedy’s cooperation with authorities and his lack of a prior criminal record. However, Judge Mastroianni emphasized the seriousness of Kennedy’s crimes, particularly the tax fraud, which he described as an attack on the integrity of the tax system. The judge also noted that Kennedy had engaged in a pattern of deception and dishonesty, including lying to the bank about his income and assets and using the fraudulently obtained loan to pay off personal expenses. Kennedy will begin serving his sentence immediately. In addition to the prison term, he has also been ordered to pay restitution to the IRS and Chicopee Savings Bank. The judge also imposed three years of supervised release following Kennedy’s release from prison.
