Three years ago, artist Francesco Clemente received an unexpected visit from renowned chef Daniel Humm at his Manhattan studio. Humm, known for his innovative cuisine at Eleven Madison Park, was visiting with gallerist Vito Schnabel. The chance encounter sparked a friendship between the two men, who bonded over their love of art and the city that embraced them. This fall, their friendship manifests in a new cocktail lounge called Clemente Bar, perched above Eleven Madison Park.
Clemente Bar is more than just a drinking spot; it’s a celebration of art and collaboration. Featuring three luminous murals by Clemente, the bar exudes the painter’s signature dreamlike and figurative style, reflecting his artistic journey since moving to New York in 1980. The bar’s design complements the artwork, with textured walnut paneling, dark marble surfaces, and a vintage couch creating a warm, intimate atmosphere.
The cocktail program, crafted by Eleven Madison Park’s beverage director Sebastian Tollius and bar manager Richie Millwater, offers surprising twists on classics with a nostalgic touch. From a Negroni-piña colada hybrid to a boulevardier inspired by Girl Scout Samoas, each drink is carefully crafted with innovative ingredients and meticulous attention to detail. Even the non-alcoholic options have undergone months of testing, ensuring a satisfying experience for everyone.
Beyond the drinks, Clemente Bar presents an inventive menu of light bites and a tasting counter inspired by Clemente’s wife, Alba, providing a more accessible way to enjoy the acclaimed cuisine of Eleven Madison Park.
Clemente’s murals add a unique dimension to the bar, with their whimsical imagery and layered complexity. The two paintings in the main bar room, featuring lovers, fish, giant eyes, and a camel, tell a story of pilgrimage, inviting viewers to explore different perspectives with each glance.
Clemente Bar exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and the power of unexpected connections. It’s a place where art, food, and design converge to create a truly unique and unforgettable experience, leaving visitors with a lasting impression of the creative synergy between Francesco Clemente and Daniel Humm.
