The Cincinnati Reds have announced that Frankie Montas has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right forearm contusion. The injury occurred in the first inning of Sunday’s 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels when Montas was struck by a line drive off the bat of Taylor Ward. He exited the game after just two outs, and Cincinnati’s bullpen pitched the remaining 8 1/3 innings.
X-rays taken after the game revealed no fractures, but Montas told Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer that he is dealing with soreness and swelling. This latest setback comes after Montas missed nearly the entirety of the 2023 season with the New York Yankees following arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder last offseason.
In January, Montas signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Reds that includes a $20 million mutual option for 2025. The Yankees acquired Montas at the 2022 trade deadline from the Oakland Athletics, but he was not fully healthy and made only eight starts for New York that season.
The Reds will hope that Montas can return from this injury quickly and help them improve on their disappointing 2023 campaign. Cincinnati finished with a 62-100 record last season, last in the National League Central. Montas is a key part of the Reds’ rotation, and his absence will be a significant blow to the team’s hopes of contending in 2024.
