## Event Horizon (1997)
Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon is a cult classic sci-fi/horror film with a gripping premise and exciting ideas. In 2047, the rescue vessel Lewis and Clark responds to a distress signal from the Event Horizon, a starship that disappeared seven years earlier. The crew of the Lewis and Clark, including Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne), Lieutenant Starck (Joely Richardson), and Event Horizon creator Dr. Weir (Sam Neill), board the Event Horizon in hopes of finding survivors.
Much to the crew’s surprise, they discover that a massacre occurred onboard. Furthermore, a sinister presence may have driven the Event Horizon’s passengers insane. Event Horizon is more akin to The Shining than Alien, but it’s a fascinating and atmospheric film that laid the groundwork for future sci-fi/horror classics. You can stream Event Horizon for free on Pluto TV.
## Crawl (2019)
Alexandre Aja’s Crawl is a pulse-pounding action horror film that was praised by Quentin Tarantino as his favorite movie of 2019. When a Category 5 hurricane hits Florida, Haley Keller (Kaya Scodelario) ignores the evacuation warning and travels to her childhood home to check on her estranged father, Dave (Barry Pepper). Upon arrival, she finds him unconscious in the crawl space, with a pack of ravenous alligators preventing their escape.
As the crawl space floods, Haley and Dave must find a way to escape before they drown or become the alligators’ next victims. With its taut 87-minute runtime, Crawl is a non-stop thrill ride that serves as a perfect example of a successful B-movie. You can stream Crawl for free on Pluto TV.
## What If (2013)
What If is a charming and witty rom-com that offers a fresh perspective on the genre. It’s been a year since med-school dropout Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) caught his girlfriend cheating on him, and he’s still struggling to move on. Ready to give up on love, he meets the lovely Chantry (Zoe Kazan) at a party. Even though she’s in a relationship, the two strike up a friendship and find themselves drawn to each other.
Leaving the friend zone and exploring a romantic relationship is a common trope in rom-coms, but What If handles it with a clever script and strong performances from Radcliffe and Kazan. You can stream What If for free on YouTube.
