Robert Freeman, the long-standing Democratic state representative for the 136th District, has apparently weathered his first primary election challenge in nearly four decades. According to unofficial results released by the Northampton County elections website, Freeman, 68, secured a decisive victory over Taiba Sultana, 40, garnering approximately three times the number of votes. Freeman’s unwavering hold on the seat is a testament to his enduring popularity and deep roots within the district, which encompasses Easton, Wilson, and parts of Palmer Township, Williams Township, Glendon, West Easton, Freemansburg, Hellertown, and Lower Saucon.
Sultana, an Easton City Council member who made history in 2022 by ousting longtime incumbent Sandra Alercia Vulcano, mounted a formidable challenge against Freeman. She campaigned on her unique experiences as a woman, Muslim, immigrant, and survivor of domestic violence and homelessness. However, Freeman cast doubt on the validity of some signatures on Sultana’s nomination petitions, alleging irregularities. Sultana dismissed these concerns as mere oversights, and they ultimately did not prevent her from appearing on the ballot.
In a notable development, Sultana participated in the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program in Northampton County Court earlier this year after being charged with harassment and simple assault related to a domestic incident. She explained her decision to enter the program as a means to protect her family from further attacks and preserve her voice as an advocate for families in the community.
As Freeman prepares to embark on his next term, he will face no Republican challenger in the fall general election. His unwavering presence in the 136th District is a testament to his enduring commitment to representing the diverse needs of his constituents.
