The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that the French Alps will host the 2030 Winter Olympics. The Games will be held across a vast and interconnected ski area spanning 600km of runs between Courchevel, Méribel, and Val Thorens.
This ambitious project will see sporting events take place in four distinct clusters, located in Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Briançon, and Nice. Stretching from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Sea, the Games will leverage existing venues to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
This marks the fourth time France will host the Olympic Winter Games, demonstrating the country’s rich history and passion for winter sports. The IOC highlighted the Games’ vision, stating it aims to unite the northern and southern French Alps, transforming the region into a winter sports hub.
The Games are expected to bring significant social and economic benefits to communities across the region, aligning with local development plans and the Olympic Agenda 2020 and 2020+5. Notably, the closing ceremony for the French Alps 2030 Games is planned to take place on the iconic seven-kilometer-long Promenade des Anglais along the Mediterranean coast. This would be a first for the Olympic Winter Games, offering a unique and memorable experience outside a traditional stadium setting, similar to the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony.
