Subhasish Chakraborty, the founder and Chairman and Managing Director of DTDC, a company now worth Rs 2,000 crore, is an embodiment of self-made success. Born into a middle-class family in Kolkata, he pursued chemistry at Ramakrishna Mission Residential College. His entrepreneurial journey began during his college years when he started working with Peerless, a large insurance company. In 1981, Peerless sent him to Bangalore to expand their insurance business. After six years, in 1987, he left the company and ventured into a chemical distribution business. However, this venture faced challenges due to inefficiencies in the postal service, leading to its failure. This setback, however, proved to be a pivotal turning point for Chakraborty. He recognized a significant gap between postal services and customer needs, an opportunity he was determined to capitalize on.
On July 26, 1990, he established his courier company, DTDC, which stands for Desk to Desk Courier & Cargo. Recognizing the potential of smaller towns, he initially focused on providing services in these areas. Starting with a modest investment of Rs 20,000, the business faced numerous hurdles, including reluctance from banks to provide loans due to the lack of venture capital. Undeterred, Chakraborty persevered, even selling his mother’s jewelry to keep the business afloat.
In 1991, he implemented a game-changing strategy: the franchise model. This involved dividing regions into zones, with each regional branch managing 30 franchises. The franchise model proved to be a significant success, propelling DTDC’s growth. Today, the company covers 14,000 PIN codes in India and offers delivery services to both retail customers and businesses. Its reach extends beyond India, with an international presence in 220 destinations globally. Major clients include Wipro, Infosys, and the Tata Group.
By 2006, DTDC had established 3,700 franchises and achieved a revenue of Rs 125 crore. Reliance Capital’s investment of Rs 70 crore further bolstered the company’s growth, making it a Rs 180 crore entity. Sales continued to soar, reaching Rs 450 crore by 2010. In 2013, DTDC acquired a 70% stake in Nikkos Logistics and established DotZot, India’s first delivery network dedicated to e-commerce companies. Furthering its innovation, in 2015, DTDC launched an automatic logistics hub in Hyderabad.
