Frost Advisory Issued for Central and Southern Pennsylvania

A frost advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service on Tuesday at 2:29 a.m. in effect until 8 a.m. for Southern Centre, Southern Clinton and Southern Lycoming as well as Blair, Huntingdon, Bedford, Fulton, Franklin, Union, Snyder, Montour, Northumberland, Columbia, Perry, Dauphin, Lebanon, Cumberland, Adams, York and Lancaster counties.

The weather service describes frost as “near-ground freezing temperatures that could kill uncovered sensitive outdoor vegetation.” Residents are advised to protect tender plants and vegetation, or bring them indoors if possible.

Frost advisories are typically issued during the months of May through October, but can be extended if necessary. They are most likely to occur when temperatures are 36 degrees or less.

In some cases, frost can be severe enough to end the growing season and is referred to as a “killing frost.” According to the weather service, if a frost advisory is issued for your area, it is recommended to cover up sensitive plants before the sun sets to help retain heat near the plants or move them indoors for the night. This will help prevent damage to vegetation and protect plants during the cold weather.
