FSSAI Seizes 700kg of Unhygienic Goat Shanks in Chennai

In a recent crackdown on food safety violations, officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) seized a whopping 700 kilograms of roasted goat shanks from a shop in Saidapet, Chennai. The meat was found stored in ‘unhygienic conditions’ within the shop’s storeroom, leading to its condemnation.

The discovery came during a routine inspection, where FSSAI officials uncovered the shanks, a popular delicacy, stored in freezers deemed unsuitable for food storage. Samples were collected and sent for testing, revealing the presence of harmful bacteria like E. coli and Staphylococcus, along with fungal growth. This contamination rendered the meat unfit for human consumption, posing a serious health risk to potential consumers.

The FSSAI designated food safety officer, Dr. P Satheesh Kumar, highlighted the importance of proper storage for such products. He explained that roasted goat shanks typically have a long shelf life, lasting several months if stored correctly. However, the seized shanks were found to be stored in a manner that compromised their safety and quality.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, Dr. Satheesh revealed that these contaminated bones were being supplied to leading hotels, including some star hotels in the city. This revelation raises concerns about potential widespread contamination and highlights the crucial need for strict food safety regulations in the hospitality sector.

To ensure public safety, the seized goat shanks were disposed of through deep burial by the Greater Chennai Corporation. The shop owner was penalized with a fine of ₹5,000 and faces further legal action under the FSSAI Act for storing food in unsanitary conditions.

Authorities are taking steps to educate the shop owner on proper food storage practices, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the crucial role of food safety regulations in safeguarding public health. It underscores the importance of vigilant monitoring and enforcement to ensure that food products are stored and handled in a hygienic and responsible manner.
