FSSAI to Sample Major Spice and Infant Nutrition Brands in India

FSSAI Samples Major Spice and Infant Nutrition Brands

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will collect and test samples from leading spice and infant nutrition brands across the country to ensure compliance with food safety regulations. This action comes in light of alleged violations reported in both the spice and infant nutrition categories.

Spice Brands Under Scrutiny for Ethylene Oxide

State food commissioners have received orders from FSSAI to gather samples from manufacturing facilities of major spice brands and test them for the presence of ethylene oxide, a pesticide that exceeded permissible levels in spices exported to overseas markets, such as Hong Kong and Singapore. The use of ethylene oxide in food is prohibited.

Infant Nutrition Brands Targeted for Sugar Content

Following reports from international organizations alleging the presence of added sugars in Nestlé’s Cerelac infant cereals, FSSAI has initiated the collection of samples from multiple infant nutrition brands. Indian regulations permit the use of certain carbohydrates in infant nutrition, but sucrose and fructose are prohibited beyond specified limits.

Compliance and Health Concerns

FSSAI emphasized the importance of compliance with food safety standards and the potential health risks associated with ethylene oxide and excessive sugar consumption. While exposure to low levels of ethylene oxide poses no immediate risk, long-term exposure can lead to health issues.

Nestlé’s Response

Nestlé India maintains that its products manufactured in India adhere to global food standards and local specifications, including the requirements for added sugars. The company has reportedly reduced added sugars in its infant cereal range by up to 30% over the past five years.
