Funko Fusion is a new game that harkens back to the days of playing Lego games with my brother. It’s easy to pick up, features franchises kids love like Star Wars and DC Comics, and has a dark sense of humor that might appeal to a younger audience. This game isn’t a satirical retelling like the classic Lego Star Wars games, but instead, embraces the “greatest hits” of its featured franchises with an edgy twist. The game feels like a mishmash of different IP, much like Fortnite, and it’s not for everyone, but it could be a gateway for kids to discover and appreciate these beloved franchises in a new way.
The game immediately grabs your attention with its off-kilter humor. In the opening, you save a fox, only to see its skin melt off shortly thereafter. The dialogue is minimal, and the game aims to appeal to kids who like scarier stuff like Five Night at Freddy’s, rather than being overly kid-friendly. Funko Fusion is a simple third-person shooter with level objectives that focus on killing enemies, gathering creatures, and finding items like batteries to open doors. It’s a fairly straightforward experience, with a lot of building and crafting, that’s likely to resonate with fans of Fortnite.
I can see the appeal of Funko Fusion for younger gamers, especially those who enjoy Fortnite. It’s a fun and accessible way to explore beloved franchises and engage in simple yet satisfying gameplay. While it might not be my cup of tea, I can appreciate its potential to spark a passion for these franchises in a new generation of players.
Funko Fusion launches for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 13 and for PS4 and Nintendo Switch on November 15.
