Gaming Gifts Dominate Holiday Wish Lists: Consoles and Games Top Kids’ Requests

The holiday season is upon us, and for many kids, video games are at the top of their wish lists. A recent survey conducted by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) revealed that 76% of children aged 10 to 17 plan to ask for game-related gifts this Christmas. This represents a slight increase from last year’s 72%, indicating that gaming continues to be a major force in holiday gift-giving.

The survey, reported by GamesIndustry.biz, highlighted consoles as the most coveted item, with nearly half of the kids (around 48%) hoping to unwrap a new gaming system. This aligns with the ongoing demand for cutting-edge technology, where gaming hardware is viewed as both a gift and a powerful entertainment tool.

New games and gaming accessories are also highly sought-after, with 41% of kids expressing interest in those. In contrast, in-game currency emerged as the least requested item, with only 38% of kids indicating they would like it as a gift.

Parents’ Spending Plans: Gaming Takes the Lead

The survey also delved into parents’ holiday spending plans. On average, U.S. parents are budgeting $312 for gifts this year, with video game-related items taking the top spot on their shopping lists. Along with games and consoles, other popular gifts for kids include money and gift cards (67%) or clothes and electronics (66%).

“Video games and video game technology have evolved quite a bit since today’s parents were kids themselves, but the fun and joy created by gameplay for families remains the same,” said ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis. “Parents see video games as more than simply a gift. With 83% of U.S. parents who say they play video games with their children, games serve as a powerful tool for families to connect with one another, especially during the holidays.”

The survey data underscores the enduring popularity of video games as a form of family entertainment. With consoles, games, and accessories topping wish lists and parents dedicating a significant portion of their holiday budget to gaming, it’s clear that the gaming industry continues to play a prominent role in the festive season.
