Ryan Garcia is confident that Devin Haney would emerge victorious in a fight against Gervonta Davis, despite Garcia’s own losses to both fighters. Garcia, who lost to Haney in a lightweight contest on Saturday night, believes that the different circumstances surrounding each matchup would lead to a different outcome.
Garcia emphasizes that he was disadvantaged in his fight against Davis, which was held at a catchweight of 136lbs with a 10lbs rehydration clause. He claims that this weakened him significantly, while he faced Haney at 140lbs and rehydrated to over 160lbs on fight night.
“Gervonta wasn’t a hard fight,” Garcia said on the PBD Podcast. “I was just weak.”
Garcia also contends that Haney is a more challenging opponent than Davis.
“Haney’s a harder fight than Gervonta,” Garcia said. “Everybody’s gonna go crazy right here, but I’ve proved them wrong before.”
Garcia points to the physical differences between the two fights as evidence of his claim. He notes that he looked significantly weaker against Davis than he did against Haney.
“You can pull up the picture of how I looked for the Tank fight and how I looked for the Haney fight,” Garcia said. “They knew what they were doing and he will never fight me at 145lbs so it doesn’t really matter.”
Garcia also alleges that Davis has attempted to court him with social media exchanges, which he believes is a sign of Davis’s insecurity.
“He was trying to go out with me – pause. He did though,” Garcia said. “He’s just clout chasing, he wanted some clout.”
Despite his own losses, Garcia maintains that Haney has the skills and advantages to defeat Davis.
“Haney beats Tank. Boxing’s a wild sport,” Garcia said. “He beats him out of just pure volume and he knows how to use his reach good.”
Garcia’s prediction that Haney will defeat Davis is sure to generate controversy, but it is a testament to his belief in his former opponent’s abilities.
