Gas Leak Prompts Lockdown at Peterborough School

A gas leak on Armour Road in the east end of Peterborough, Ontario, prompted a lockdown at Kaawaate East City Public School on Wednesday afternoon.

Marguerite Masterson, the school’s principal, stated that the lockdown was a precautionary measure and that all students and staff were safe. Enbridge Gas and Peterborough Fire Services were on the scene to address the leak.

“Our navigators are familiar with indoor recess routines which is how we have proceeded so please know there has been limited disruption to our school day,” Masterson said in a statement to parents and guardians.

Intermediate students, who typically sign out for second lunch, remained inside and were provided food options from the school’s nutrition program.

“While students in the portables are able to stay in their learning space, we have decided to bring them indoors for the afternoon as a proactive added step,” Masterson said.

At dismissal, there were no changes to procedures related to bus loading, walkers, and the “Kiss and Ride” parent pickup program. Families were advised to consider alternate routes to and from the school and avoid using Armour Road.

“There is no need for parents/guardians to pick students up early,” Masterson said.
