The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is set to conduct the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2025 for admission into postgraduate engineering programs. The institute has unveiled the GATE 2025 syllabus and exam pattern on its official website, gate.iitr.ac.in. The exam will be administered as a Computer Based Test (CBT) in English at designated centers across various cities, lasting for three hours.
Candidates can choose from a total of 30 subjects (papers) for the exam. The test structure includes three types of questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. The exam assesses a range of skills, including recall, comprehension, application, analysis, and synthesis.
The mark distribution varies for different papers. For all papers EXCEPT Architecture (AR), Chemistry (CY), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), Ecology and Evolution (EY), Geology and Geophysics (GG), Mathematics (MA), Physics (PH), Statistics (ST), Humanities and Social Sciences (XH), and Life Sciences (XL), the exam structure includes:
* General Aptitude: 15 marks
* Engineering Mathematics: 13 marks
* Subject Questions: 72 marks
* Total: 100 marks
(Note: Engineering Sciences (XE) includes an Engineering Mathematics section XE-A worth 15 marks).
For papers Architecture (AR), Chemistry (CY), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), Ecology and Evolution (EY), Geology and Geophysics (GG), Mathematics (MA), Physics (PH), Statistics (ST), Humanities and Social Sciences (XH), and Life Sciences (XL), the structure is:
* General Aptitude: 15 marks
* Subject Questions: 85 marks
* Total: 100 marks
Questions are assigned either 1 or 2 marks. Negative marking applies to Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) with 1/3 mark deducted for a 1-mark MCQ and 2/3 mark deducted for a 2-mark MCQ. There is no negative marking for wrong answers in Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) or Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. Partial marking is not applicable in Multiple Select Questions (MSQ).
