GATE 2025 Registration Opens on August 28th: Key Dates, Eligibility, and Exam Pattern

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, designated as the nodal institute for organizing the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2025, has announced a revised registration opening date. Aspirants can now apply for admission to postgraduate engineering programs starting August 28th, 2024, at gate2025.iitr.ac.in. While the last date to complete the application without a late fee remains September 26th, and the extended deadline with a late fee is October 7th, 2024, candidates are advised that other dates may be subject to change.

The GATE 2025 exam is scheduled to take place on February 1st, 2nd, 15th, and 16th, 2025, in two shifts – forenoon (9:30 am to 12:30 pm) and afternoon (2:30 pm to 5:30 pm) on each of these days. Importantly, candidates are permitted to fill out only one application form. If they wish to appear in a second paper from a two-paper combination, they can add the respective paper to their original application. Multiple applications will not be accepted and will be rejected without any refund.

Eligibility Criteria

There is no age limit to appear in the GATE 2025 exam. Candidates currently pursuing their third year or higher in an undergraduate degree program or those who have completed a government-approved degree program in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Science/Commerce/Arts/Humanities are eligible to participate.

Application Fee

* Female/SC/ST/PwD candidates (per test paper): ₹ 900 (August 24 to September 26), ₹ 1400 (with late fee: September 27 to October 7, 2024)
* All other candidates, including foreign nationals (per test paper): ₹ 1800 (August 24 to September 26), ₹ 2,300 (with late fee: September 27 to October 7, 2024)

Exam Pattern

GATE 2025 will comprise 30 exam papers conducted entirely in English and of objective type. Candidates can choose one or two test papers from permissible combinations. The exam duration is 3 hours, and GATE scores will be valid for three years from the result’s announcement date. The question types include:

Only one out of four options is correct.

One or more than one out of four options is/are correct.

Numerical Answer Type (NAT):

Answers must be keyed in using a virtual keypad.

Questions carry 1 mark or 2 marks.

Negative Marking:

For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be a negative marking. 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer in a 1-mark MCQ, and 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer in a 2-mark MCQ. There is no negative marking for wrong answers in MSQ or NAT questions. There is no partial marking in MSQ.
