NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4060, the mainstream gaming GPU released on June 29, 2023, has become a resounding success among PC gamers. The latest Steam Hardware & Software Survey results for July 2024 reveal that the RTX 4060 has cemented its position as one of the most popular gaming GPUs. Its popularity surged in the past month, exceeding even the iconic GeForce GTX 1060 (a testament to the enduring legacy of the Pascal architecture) and the Turing-based GeForce RTX 2060. It has now cracked the top five, sitting just below the GeForce RTX 3070, RTX 3060 Ti, GTX 1650, and the current top dog, the GeForce RTX 3060.
The GeForce RTX 40 Series is experiencing a strong showing overall. The Steam data also indicates the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4070 are steadily climbing the charts, both now sitting just outside the top ten. It may take some time for the GeForce RTX 4060 to catch up to the GeForce RTX 3060, but with recent rumors suggesting NVIDIA might halt production of its most popular gaming video card, we might witness a shift in the rankings as we enter 2025.
The GeForce RTX 4060, priced at $299 USD, occupies the sweet spot for gamers, striking a balance between price and performance. Interestingly, competing products from AMD and Intel haven’t managed to make a significant dent in GeForce’s dominant presence in the minds and wallets of PC gamers. While Steam’s Hardware & Software Survey figures don’t represent sales data, they provide an accurate reflection of hardware and software trends among PC gamers and hardcore enthusiasts.
With the next generation of GPUs anticipated either later this year or in early 2025, the GeForce RTX 5060 won’t make its debut until the second half of next year at the earliest. It will arrive well after the GeForce RTX 5080 and RTX 5090. Considering the lack of significant competition, particularly from AMD’s RDNA 3 generation and Intel’s Arc Graphics, the GeForce RTX 4060 could very well become the most popular GPU by the time the RTX 5060 or a serious mainstream contender enters the market.
Here’s a look at the Top 20 GPUs based on the latest Steam Hardware & Software Survey results for July 2024.
