GenCell Secures Major Contract with Mexico’s CFE for Large-Scale Hydrogen-Powered Backup Power Deployment

GenCell Energy, a leader in hydrogen-powered energy solutions, has announced a significant expansion of its presence in Mexico. The company has received a new order from Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), Mexico’s state-owned utility and North America’s largest, for the deployment of numerous GenCell REX backup power units. This order, worth US$4.4 million, represents a continuation of a multi-phase project that started with a tender won in December 2023.

The GenCell REX units are designed to provide immediate, reliable, and emission-free backup power during grid outages. This is particularly crucial for CFE’s substations, ensuring continuous electricity supply even during extreme weather conditions. The system is designed to meet stringent cybersecurity and regulatory requirements, including mandatory 24-48 hour backup power. GenCell is working with its local partner, Gncell Energy de Mexico, to complete the rollout by 2025.

The REX solution incorporates GenCell’s proprietary AI-driven energy management software, known as GenCell GEMS. This software, including the GenCell GEMS Community application, allows for centralized remote management and monitoring of all REX units and related equipment, providing comprehensive oversight of CFE’s power distribution network.

Rami Reshef, co-founder and CEO of GenCell, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with CFE and the project’s progress: “We are honored and pleased to continue our partnership with CFE and to reach this exciting stage of the project, involving the professional rollout of dozens of units across Mexico and executing deep knowledge transfer to the CFE team. We are proud to contribute to the crucial resilience of CFE’s distribution network and to the utility’s ability to transition to a clean reliable energy future.”

GenCell’s commitment to clean energy solutions aligns with CFE’s objective of advancing towards net-zero emissions, grid hardening, and energy security. The company’s GreenFSG vision focuses on promoting circular economies that deliver long-duration clean power globally. This project is expected to serve as a model for other utilities in North America seeking resilient and environmentally friendly backup power solutions.

GenCell Energy is a global provider of clean power solutions based on alkaline fuel cells, Hydrogen2Power, Ammonia2Power, and Water2Power technologies. The company is committed to replacing diesel-powered generators with its innovative, zero-emission alternatives, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. GenCell has deployed its solutions in 23 countries, offering resilient and weather-resistant backup power for utilities, telecom, EV charging, and other critical applications.
