Georgia May Jagger on Sexing Up Sustainability with May Botanicals

As she prepares to leave Los Angeles and return home to London, rock ‘n’ roll icon Georgia May Jagger spoke with Joe Bromley about her mission to revolutionize the natural skincare industry.

Jagger, known for her infectious smile and effortless London style, is now setting her sights on making sustainability more alluring. “Many natural beauty brands, or those supporting charities, have a certain aesthetic,” says the 32-year-old model over the phone from her Los Angeles residence. And what exactly is that aesthetic? “Dull.”

In October of last year, she introduced May Botanicals, her own line of natural skincare products, with a launch party in London. The line includes five items, including the top-selling Clean Slate Cleanser and Super Balm, which can be used on both the face and body. “I personally handle all the art direction and photography. I was adamant about giving it a creative edge, something akin to what you’d see in a cosmetics or perfume campaign.”

Her impeccable ancestry—her father is Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, and her mother is the former Mrs. Murdoch, American model Jerry Hall—and her extensive resume in the modeling industry, including collaborations with every major fashion house, make her uniquely qualified to make 100% biodegradable kelp masks as covetable as the latest crimson lipstick.

Hall sparked her interest in natural beauty. “They had limited resources when she was growing up, so they relied heavily on household items for their beauty routines—coffee body scrubs, olive oil as a moisturizer, and so on,” she shares. “I frequently observed her doing that, which inspired my sister [Lizzy] and me to experiment with creating our own products.”

Her mother also happens to be her beauty and style icon. “She exudes glamour—her style is impeccable, and she always does her own makeup. I also admire Blondie’s style.”

She can’t help but chuckle when asked about her father’s skincare routine. “I don’t think he has an elaborate skincare regimen—but I’ll have to inquire.”

When discussing May Botanicals’ environmental credentials, Jagger is quick to expound on them. “I’ve been associated with WWF for a considerable time, but I also collaborated with Project Zero, an organization dedicated to ocean conservation,” she explains. “My products are certified organic by the Soil Association… and we recently collaborated with Earthed, a remarkable charity focused on regenerative agriculture and planting.”

I question the extent of her environmental activism—what are her thoughts on climate change protests? “There’s always more to be done. When you become so consumed by the negativity, it’s easy to feel powerless,” she admits. Should we… simply halt oil production? “I believe we should,” she declares. Whether she would join the orange-clad demonstrators and descend upon the M25 is another matter. “I’m not sure. I’m concentrating on the charities I’m currently collaborating with…”

Not long before our discussion, news of the Duchess of Sussex’s lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, emerged. However, Jagger is uncertain whether she will follow in Meghan’s footsteps. “I don’t want to introduce a slew of new products—it’s a less-is-more approach,” she explains. “Our focus is not on rapid expansion. That’s why I’m handling everything myself, rather than licensing the brand to another company.”

However, she is expanding—the next step is launching in the United States. As for Jagger herself, her two-year stint in Los Angeles is coming to an end. “I’m hoping to relocate permanently to London this summer,” she reveals. “L.A. offers stunning landscapes and beaches, but it feels dispersed as a city… it lacks a central hub.”

Most importantly, she misses her friends back home. “When everyone lives within a Tube stop of each other, it’s easier to meet up spontaneously.”

This June, we can expect to see a radiant Georgia May Jagger arm-in-arm with Cara Delevingne, Suki Waterhouse, and Alexa Chung at the Serpentine Summer Party.
