Germany secured a place in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Denmark on Saturday. The match, which was delayed by a thunderstorm in the first half, saw Germany come out on top thanks to second-half goals from Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala.
The first half was a tense affair, with both sides eager to break the deadlock. Germany started strong, with Nico Schlotterbeck having a goal ruled out for a foul in the build-up. Denmark, however, grew into the game and had a few chances of their own. The weather intervened in the 39th minute, forcing a 20-minute delay as a thunderstorm swept across Munich.
The second half continued in a similar vein, with both teams battling for supremacy. Just after the restart, Danish defender Joachim Andersen went from hero to zero. He had a close-range finish ruled out for offside, and moments later, he conceded a penalty after fouling Havertz inside the box. Havertz stepped up and confidently converted the penalty to give Germany the lead in the 53rd minute.
Germany doubled their lead in the 68th minute when Musiala showcased his talent. He ran onto a ball over the top of the Danish defense and expertly curled his shot into the back of the net, scoring his third goal of the tournament.
The 2-0 victory secured Germany’s spot in the last eight, where they will face the winner of the match between Spain and Georgia.
