Germany is making a significant move to bolster Ukraine’s defense against Russia, pledging an additional €400 million in military aid for 2024. This brings the total German military support for Ukraine in the upcoming year to nearly €7.9 billion, making it the second-largest contributor after the United States.
The additional funds, according to a finance ministry document, are urgently needed to address Ukraine’s immediate needs on the battlefield. The document, seen by AFP, specifically mentions drones, air defense equipment, and other essential military supplies that are required “without delay.” The need for this surge in support is underscored by recent Russian advances in eastern Ukraine, which have resulted in “heavy material losses” for Ukrainian forces. The document warns that without a substantial increase in aid, Ukraine could face significant setbacks in its defense efforts.
This move by Germany reflects its unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine in its struggle against the Russian invasion. However, the decision comes at a time of growing pressure on Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Recent regional elections saw a surge in support for parties opposed to Germany’s continued support for Ukraine, increasing domestic pressure on Scholz to justify further aid amid economic challenges at home.
Despite these plans for increased aid, Berlin is also preparing to reduce its overall budget for Ukraine in 2024 to around €4.4 billion as part of broader cost-cutting measures. This balancing act highlights the delicate political and economic considerations involved in Germany’s ongoing support for Ukraine.
