German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has emphasized the need for Europe to continue increasing aid to Ukraine, despite the approval of a substantial U.S. aid package. Scholz made these remarks during a meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Berlin, where both leaders vowed to continue supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary. Scholz praised the U.S. aid package’s approval by Congress as an encouraging and necessary signal. However, he stressed that Europe must not become complacent and must further expand its support to Ukraine. Scholz particularly appealed to other European countries with Patriot missile systems to consider supplying one to Ukraine.
Despite these commitments, Scholz reiterated his refusal to provide Ukraine with Taurus long-range cruise missiles. He explained that the responsible use of Taurus missiles requires German military involvement, which he is unwilling to provide. Scholz highlighted the various military equipment Germany has provided to Ukraine, including armored vehicles, anti-aircraft systems, and now a third Patriot missile battery. He emphasized that his decision regarding Taurus missiles remains unchanged.
Sunak, who pledged new military aid to Ukraine on Tuesday, commended Germany’s efforts in providing air defense systems. He acknowledged that different countries have varying capabilities to contribute. Ukraine’s ongoing shortages of shells and air defense systems have allowed Russian forces to advance in some areas of eastern Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly appealed for greater international assistance, warning that Ukraine will face defeat without it. The ongoing conflict and the need for continued support for Ukraine remain at the forefront of European discussions.
