Getlink Invests to Foster Competition in Cross-Channel Rail Services

Getlink, the operator of the Channel Tunnel, is investing millions of pounds to stimulate the emergence of new cross-Channel rail services, introducing competition to Eurostar and maximizing the tunnel’s capacity.

The French company, formerly known as Groupe Eurotunnel, manages the tunnel’s infrastructure as well as LeShuttle, which provides passenger and freight train services. Getlink’s CEO, Yann Leriche, has been advocating for expanding the number of operators using the tunnel, recognizing the untapped potential of cross-Channel rail services.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Leriche highlighted that the tunnel operates significantly below its capacity of 1,000 trains per day, with only 400 currently in operation. He emphasized that even during peak hours, there is substantial room for more high-speed and freight trains.

Several companies have expressed interest in initiating new passenger rail services, including prominent names such as Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, Dutch startup Heuro, and Spanish-led Evolyn, backed by the Cosmen family, investors in the major British transport company Mobico.

Traditionally, the complexity and high costs associated with launching rail services through the Channel Tunnel have acted as barriers to entry. Specialized trains are required to meet the tunnel’s stringent safety standards. However, recent advancements, like the certification of Alstom’s new TGV trains for operation through the tunnel, have lowered these entry barriers.

Getlink’s investment aims to facilitate the expansion of cross-Channel rail services beyond Eurostar’s existing routes connecting London to destinations such as Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam. There is considerable demand for travel from other European regions, including Germany and Switzerland, which could potentially generate up to four million additional passenger journeys.

This expansion is expected to enhance travel and tourism, offering more travel options and fostering greater connectivity across Europe.
