Ghazipur Landfill Fire: Authorities Battle Blaze, Investigate Cause

Thick smoke continues to rise from the Ghazipur landfill site as authorities battle a fire that emerged on Sunday evening. The fire has caused breathing problems for nearby residents and triggered a political debate between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The Delhi government has instructed its environment department to submit a detailed report on the fire’s cause and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents. The MCD has deployed fire tenders, excavators, and inert materials to extinguish the fire. A case has been registered against unidentified individuals under IPC sections related to endangering life and health.

Delhi Mayor and BJP leader Virendra Sachdeva has accused the AAP-led MCD of “criminal negligence,” while Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely has emphasized the importance of collaboration and putting aside political differences to address the fire’s impact on public health and air quality.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai has ordered a report on the fire’s origin and the actions taken to contain it. The report will also include the department’s summer action plan to prevent such incidents at landfill sites across Delhi.

Despite the ongoing efforts to extinguish the fire, thick smoke continues to shroud the area, posing health risks to local residents. The authorities are urging caution and requesting the public to avoid the affected area until the smoke dissipates.
