MCD Controls Ghazipur Landfill Fire, Extinguishing 90%
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has made significant headway in controlling the massive fire at the Ghazipur landfill. Officials reported that approximately 90% of the blaze has been extinguished, leaving isolated flames in a confined 3,000 square meter area.
To combat the fire, MCD implemented a two-pronged approach involving both fire brigade operations and the use of inert and construction and demolition waste to smother the flames. Over 600 tonnes of inert waste have been utilized, along with the deployment of 16 excavators, two bulldozers, and six fire tenders.
MCD emphasized that their teams are particularly active at night, when the flames are more visible, to prevent any further spread. They anticipate having the fire fully extinguished by late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
Smoke Dissipation and Pollution Concerns
While the fire is largely under control, concerns remain regarding the smoke and dust pollution emanating from the landfill. MCD has deployed sprinklers to mitigate the spread of airborne particles, but residents in the vicinity have reported difficulties in breathing since Sunday evening.
Murga Mandi Incident and BJP Allegations
In a separate incident, a portion of a shed near Murga Mandi collapsed due to strong winds, spilling garbage onto the road. No injuries were reported.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged that 13 of the 25 trommel machines at the landfill are faulty. However, MCD refuted these claims, stating that all machines are operational.
Mayor’s Visit and Surveillance Measures
Mayor Shelly Oberoi visited the site on Monday morning and assured that the situation was under control. The civic body has also implemented enhanced surveillance measures, including CCTV cameras, heat sensors, sprinklers, and excavators, at the landfill.
Delhi Fire Service has committed to maintaining 4-5 firefighters on standby for the next five days to provide immediate assistance if needed.
