Giants Fall Short in Snell’s Absence, Lose to Mets 8-2

The Giants’ struggles continued on Wednesday as they dropped an 8-2 decision to the Mets. Despite missing their scheduled starter, Blake Snell, the Giants were unable to overcome a shaky bullpen performance and numerous missed scoring opportunities.

The Giants got off to a rough start, with Sean Hjelle allowing three runs on two home runs in his 2.1 innings of work. Landen Roupp, who was recalled before the game to take Snell’s roster spot, allowed three more runs in his 2.1 innings. The eight runs allowed by the Giants’ relievers matched the fewest they have given up in any of Snell’s scheduled start days this season.

Meanwhile, the Giants’ offense was held in check by Mets starter Sean Manaea. The Giants loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning but failed to score, and they stranded 11 men on base overall. The Giants’ only runs came on a solo home run by Tyler Fitzgerald off reliever Reed Garrett in the sixth inning.

The loss dropped the Giants to 12-14 on the season and prevented them from climbing back to .500 for the first time since the fourth game of the year. The Giants will look to bounce back on Thursday as they welcome the Pirates to Oracle Park for a three-game series. Kyle Harrison (2-1, 5.00), Jordan Hicks (2-0, 1.61), and Keaton Winn (2-3, 3.54) are lined up to start the series, which will also mark Joey Bart’s return to San Francisco.
