Goa, renowned for its sun-kissed beaches and vibrant nightlife, is making a strategic shift to attract tourists to its lesser-known hinterlands. This move, spearheaded by the state government, emphasizes the development of diverse and sustainable tourism experiences that go beyond the traditional beach holiday.
The recent participation of Minister Rohan Khaunte in a white-water rafting event on the Mhadei River in Valpoi serves as a prime example of this initiative. The event, held on August 14, 2024, showcased the potential for adventure tourism in the region and demonstrated the government’s commitment to developing sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities.
Alongside the Minister, key government officials, including Deputy Director of Tourism Kuldeep Arolkar, highlighted the region’s natural beauty and its potential for adventure and cultural tourism. Hon’ble Tourism Minister, Shri. Rohan A. Khaunte stated, “Goa has always been known for its beaches, coastal life, and vibrant party scene, but there is so much more to discover. Today, we experienced river rafting in Valpoi, Sattari—a refreshing and rejuvenating activity. It’s a perfect adventure for everyone, whether visiting with friends or family, offering a deeper understanding of what Goa truly represents. Beyond our beautiful coastline, we have a rich ecological life, expansive hinterlands, adventure sports, wellness activities, and more. This complements the Goan spirit of “Atithi Devo Bhava,” where we extend our warmest hospitality. Come and explore a new side of tourism—Goa Beyond Beaches, the hinterlands, innovative tourism services, and the thrill of river rafting.”
The event served as a platform to showcase the hidden gems of Goa’s hinterlands, emphasizing the importance of regenerative tourism practices. These practices aim to ensure that tourism activities have a positive impact on the local environment, economy, and communities. By promoting activities like river rafting, nature trails, and cultural experiences, the government aims to preserve the region’s ecological balance and rich cultural heritage.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Department of Tourism to promote Goa as a holistic travel destination where nature, culture, and adventure converge. By inviting tourists to explore the hidden treasures of its hinterlands, Goa is positioning itself as a unique and diverse travel destination that caters to a wider range of interests.
The focus on sustainable practices further highlights Goa’s commitment to maintaining its natural and cultural assets for future generations, ensuring a lasting and positive impact on the environment and the local communities.
