Goa Tourism Makes a Splash at WTM London 2024: Embracing Sustainable Growth and ‘Goa Beyond Beaches’

Goa Tourism made a significant splash at the World Travel Market (WTM) London 2024, held from November 5th to 7th, highlighting the state’s unique blend of cultural heritage, spirituality, natural beauty, and commitment to sustainable tourism.

The Goa pavilion at WTM London wasn’t just a display – it was an immersive experience, showcasing the state’s dedication to regenerative tourism and positioning Goa as an enriching destination beyond its iconic beaches. Under the “Goa Beyond Beaches” initiative, the pavilion presented a captivating glimpse into Goa’s diverse offerings, showcasing not only its picturesque beaches but also its vibrant cultural heritage, spiritual retreats, adventure tourism opportunities, and the beauty of its scenic hinterlands. This approach encourages visitors to explore Goa’s true essence, reducing pressure on popular coastal areas and promoting responsible, eco-friendly travel.

Leading the Goa delegation was the Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, accompanied by key officials including Shri Sanjeev Ahuja, IAS, Secretary Tourism; Shri Sandip Jacques, IAS, Secretary (Exposition of St. Francis Xavier); Shri Kuldeep Arolkar, Deputy Director, Department of Tourism; and Shri Shawn Mendes, OSD to the Minister for Tourism. Together, they engaged with global tourism leaders to forge connections that would drive Goa’s tourism vision forward and expand its presence on the global stage.

Minister Khaunte emphasized that WTM London provided an ideal platform to introduce Goa’s regenerative tourism initiatives, which aim to preserve the state’s natural and cultural assets. His message resonated with conscious travelers and industry stakeholders who value sustainable tourism practices.

The Goa team met with officials from several prominent pavilions, including the Sharjah International Marine Sports Club Pavilion and the Saudi Pavilion. Minister Khaunte and his delegation engaged in productive discussions with His Excellency Ahmed Al-Khateeb, Minister of Tourism and Chairman of the Saudi Tourism Authority, exploring potential collaborations that could bolster Goa’s visibility on a global scale and promote mutual tourism interests. This collaborative approach reflects Goa’s strategic move toward building valuable networks and fostering tourism exchanges that contribute to long-term growth.

Goa Tourism aims to leverage these relationships to diversify its visitor base and tap into new markets, especially in the Middle East and other regions where cultural tourism holds strong appeal. The presence of prominent members from the Goan diaspora, including opera singer Oscar Castellino; PR Director of GOA UK, Chloe De Mendonca; President of GOA UK, Ravi Vaz; and Chris Fernandes, father of former UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman, further underscored Goa’s cultural appeal. Their involvement added a layer of nostalgia, reconnecting international Goans with their heritage and celebrating the enduring ties that bind the Goan community across continents.

Secretary Tourism, Shri Sanjeev Ahuja, IAS, emphasized that Goa’s approach aligns with the values of conscious travelers who prioritize sustainable, authentic experiences. He noted that the pavilion’s presentation allowed visitors to glimpse Goa’s depth, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a responsible and eco-friendly destination.

The delegation’s active participation at WTM London marked an important step in Goa’s vision to position itself as a global tourism destination rooted in culture and sustainability. Minister Khaunte expressed pride in Goa’s diverse tourism offerings and the opportunity to present them to an international audience. He highlighted that showcasing Goa’s heritage, spirituality, and environmental focus at WTM London helped build valuable connections with global tourism leaders, setting the stage for future collaborations.

The delegation’s efforts at WTM London 2024 reflect Goa’s strategic direction: to attract conscious travelers, foster sustainable growth, and present Goa as a destination that respects its cultural and natural heritage. By engaging with global industry leaders and promoting a unique tourism model, Goa Tourism aims to pave the way for a future where tourism development aligns with environmental preservation and community welfare.

Goa Tourism’s impactful presence at WTM London 2024 has laid a strong foundation for future growth, elevating Goa’s reputation as a sustainable and culturally rich destination. Through the “Goa Beyond Beaches” initiative and collaborative efforts with international tourism stakeholders, Goa is positioning itself as a must-visit location for travelers seeking meaningful and responsible travel experiences. The event underscored Goa’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty and cultural assets while fostering global connections that will drive sustainable tourism in the years to come.
