Goal-Line Technology: A Review

Goal-line technology (GLT), which helps determine if a ball crosses the goal line, has been widely adopted in professional football in Europe since 2006. The technology initially faced some challenges in France and Italy, but it has been consistently used in Spain since 2013, with only a few minor controversies.

In France, the Ligue 1 decided to continue using Hawk-Eye technology for two more years in 2022, after partnering with the company for a total of 3 million euros. However, in Italy, the technology has faced some criticism due to errors. The watch signal, which is part of the GLT system, is not the final decision for the referee and does not compel them to change their call.

In Portugal, there has never been GLT in the elite Primeira Liga due to its high economic cost. Goal-line technology was used in the Portuguese League Cup in the 19-20 and 20-21 campaigns, but it is not currently used in the top division. Portugal and Greece are the only two elite European football leagues that have not opted for this technology.

Despite the challenges faced in some countries, GLT has been widely accepted as a reliable and effective way to eliminate controversial goals. The technology is considered more expensive than other options, but it is seen as a valuable investment for top-level football.
