Golf World No. 1 Scheffler Arrested at PGA Championship for Traffic Violation

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler was arrested on Friday, May 17, on his way to the PGA Championship at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky. Scheffler was detained for allegedly failing to follow police orders amid a pedestrian fatality investigation. The incident occurred around 6:00 AM, just a few hours before Scheffler was scheduled to tee off in the second round of the tournament. According to police, Scheffler was driving his SUV when he approached a traffic checkpoint near the entrance to Valhalla. An officer instructed him to stop, but Scheffler reportedly continued driving past. The officer pursued Scheffler’s vehicle and eventually stopped him a short distance away. Scheffler was then handcuffed and taken into custody. He was booked on charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals. Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, said that the arrest was a “big misunderstanding” and that they plan to contest the charges. Romines added that Scheffler was following the directions of a PGA Championship official when he approached the checkpoint. The PGA Championship released a statement saying that play would be delayed due to the incident. The second round was scheduled to start 1 hour and 20 minutes later than originally planned. Scheffler was released from jail later that morning and returned to Valhalla Golf Club in time to tee off in the second round. He shot a 69 on Friday and is currently tied for 10th place. The pedestrian who was struck and killed has been identified as a 59-year-old man from Louisville. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
