Gonzales Wins Texas GOP Runoff, Defeating Far-Right Challenger Herrera

Representative Tony Gonzales (R-Texas), has clinched his Republican primary runoff election, beating out far-right challenger Brandon Herrera. Gonzales, who is seeking a third term representing a predominantly Hispanic district in southwest Texas, faced a runoff after neither candidate secured a majority of votes in the March primary.

The 23rd district of Texas, which Gonzales represents, boasts the longest stretch of border territory of any congressional district, spanning over 800 miles. It also encompasses Uvalde, where a devastating elementary school shooting occurred two years ago, resulting in the deaths of 19 children and two adults.

Gonzales, who has diverged from his party on issues such as gun safety, immigration, and same-sex marriage, faced a challenge from Herrera, a MAGA supporter and gun rights advocate. Herrera’s YouTube channel, titled “The AK Guy,” features gun-related content.

Gonzales garnered endorsements from high-profile figures including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Actor Matthew McConaughey, a Texas native, also voiced his support through robocalls.

Herrera, on the other hand, received backing from controversial representatives Matt Gaetz and Bob Good of Florida. Outside groups invested over $5 million in ad spending for the race, with organizations such as the Republican Jewish Coalition Victory Fund, the Hispanic Leadership Alliance, and the American Action Network supporting Gonzales.

Herrera framed the contest as “an establishment versus far-right, populist race,” while Gonzales acknowledged the need to protect his right flank. Despite the challenge from the far right, Gonzales’ significant presence in conservative media, including frequent appearances on Fox News to discuss border issues, likely contributed to his victory.
