Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., dismissed approximately 50 employees for participating in protests against the company’s cloud project with Israel. The contract, valued at $1.2 billion, was jointly secured by Google and Amazon and involves collaboration with various Israeli government agencies, including the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The affected employees filed a formal complaint with the US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on April 29, alleging that Google violated their labor rights under US law. Earlier in April, Google terminated the employment of 28 employees, citing disruptions to operations in office premises due to protests that allegedly violated the company’s code of conduct. Subsequently, Google laid off an additional 20 workers. The employees’ complaint argues that Google infringed upon their rights by dismissing or placing them on administrative leave in retaliation for their participation in a peaceful and non-disruptive protest that was directly connected to their working conditions. Google, however, characterized the employees’ actions as unacceptable and disruptive to business operations. Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the company expects its employees to adhere to its policies and refrain from engaging in disruptive or unsafe behavior in the workplace.
