Google’s Pixel devices have long supported Battery Share, a feature that allows users to wirelessly charge other devices and accessories using their phone. Previously, this could be done even while the phone was plugged in and charging via a wired connection. However, with the arrival of the Google Pixel 9 series, this functionality has been altered.
As reported by Android Police, a new Google support page reveals that Battery Share is now automatically deactivated whenever a Pixel 9 phone is connected to a wired charger. This change effectively prevents users from simultaneously charging their phone and accessories. While Google has not explicitly stated the reason behind this modification, it’s likely a move to mitigate heat generation and enhance the lifespan of the phone’s battery.
This shift marks a departure from earlier Pixel models, where Battery Share would automatically activate upon starting wired charging. Users didn’t have to manually enable it in the settings. Conversely, on those devices, Battery Share would automatically deactivate shortly after if no accessory was being charged.
While not a major change, the new behavior does impact the user experience. Using Battery Share during wired charging inherently reduces the overall charging speed. Additionally, several reviewers have highlighted the improved battery efficiency of the Pixel 9 series, meaning users will likely spend less time charging their devices anyway.
It remains to be seen if a future software update will retroactively deactivate this feature on older Pixel models, like the Pixel 8 Pro. The Google Pixel 9 series consists of four phones: the standard Pixel 9 and three Pro models – the Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The Pixel 5 was the first Pixel phone to introduce Battery Share (reverse wireless charging). Notably, the newly introduced Pixel 9 Pro Fold, similar to its predecessor, the Pixel Fold, doesn’t support Battery Share at all.
