The successor to the familiar, if somewhat awkwardly named, Chromecast with Google TV has taken an unexpected turn. Leaked images reveal a device that bears a striking resemblance to a wireless charging pad, far removed from the traditional plug-in form factor. Despite its unconventional appearance, the device is accompanied by a familiar remote control, similar to the one found with the current Chromecast with Google TV.
Two cables emerge from the rear of the device, likely for power and HDMI connectivity, though the device’s rear remains unseen. Its thickness suggests potential for Ethernet integration, but this remains unconfirmed. The device is reportedly dubbed the Google TV Streamer, maintaining Google’s tendency for uninspired names.
The remote control presents a more streamlined appearance. The quirky legacy Google Assistant logo has been replaced with a standard microphone icon, while the grey home button has swapped positions. Brand-specific buttons for YouTube and Netflix are present, with the YouTube button potentially mirroring the Onn 4K Pro’s ability to launch YouTube TV by default. A power button and a star button, reminiscent of the Onn 4K Pro’s functionality, occupy their usual positions.
The limited details available offer little insight into the device’s purpose. The redesigned form factor could simply accommodate new internal components requiring more space. Or it could signify a completely new approach to streaming. Whatever the reason, the device’s resemblance to a wireless charging pad begs the question: is Google redefining the streaming experience, or is it merely adapting to the demands of modern technology?
We’ll have to wait for Google’s event on August 13th in Mountain View for answers. One thing is certain: this is no ordinary set-top box. Its unconventional design and shrouded intentions are sure to generate plenty of speculation in the tech world.
