Google’s New Pixel 9 Phones Come in 100% Plastic-Free Packaging, a Year Ahead of Schedule

Google is taking a significant step towards its sustainability goals with the release of its new Pixel 9 smartphone series. These phones will be packaged in 100% plastic-free packaging, a milestone achieved a full year ahead of the company’s 2025 target.

This achievement is a testament to Google’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The company has replaced traditional plastic components like shrink wrap and plastic labels with fiber-based alternatives. The paper used is three times stronger and 70% more stretchable than previous iterations, ensuring the packaging remains robust and durable.

Furthermore, Google has redesigned the packaging for Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit products to be lighter and more easily recyclable. Inside, the devices are protected by molded fiber pulp made from recycled newspaper. This eco-conscious approach is not only beneficial for the environment but also highlights Google’s innovation in packaging design.

Google’s achievement sets a high standard for the tech industry. While other companies, like Apple and Samsung, have also made pledges to eliminate plastic packaging, Google has successfully implemented its plan ahead of schedule. While Apple’s Apple Watch Series 9 features 100% fiber-based packaging, its iPhone 15 packaging still contains a small percentage of plastic. Samsung, aiming for a 2025 deadline, has replaced plastic in the boxes and internal trays of the Galaxy S24 series with recycled paper, but plastic components remain.

The Pixel 9 series, which includes the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, will begin arriving in stores this week. The Pixel Watch 3 is also set to launch on September 10th. As consumers become increasingly conscious of environmental impact, Google’s commitment to plastic-free packaging is likely to resonate positively with buyers. By prioritizing sustainability, Google demonstrates its leadership in creating a greener future for the tech industry.
