GPD has just unveiled its latest gaming handheld, the Pocket 4, and it’s packing some serious power. This device is the first to feature AMD’s new Ryzen AI 300 series ‘Strix Point’ APU, specifically the flagship Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.
The Pocket 4 boasts an impressive 8.8-inch LTPS display with a 2.5K resolution and a smooth 144Hz refresh rate. This screen also features 97% DCI-P3 color coverage and 500 nits of brightness, ensuring vibrant visuals. But the Pocket 4 is more than just a gaming machine. It’s equipped with a physical keyboard, touchpad, and a 180-degree rotatable screen, making it versatile enough to double as a tablet. Think of it as a 2-in-1 tablet and notebook, all powered by the cutting-edge Strix Point APU.
Under the hood, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 APU delivers incredible performance. It boasts 12 cores and 24 threads, along with 16 RDNA 3.5 Compute Units. This powerful processor can be configured with TDPs ranging from 20W to 28W, offering flexibility for both performance and power consumption. GPD claims the Pocket 4 outperforms the Ryzen 9 7950X in single-core Cinebench, the 5950X in multi-core Cinebench, and even the upcoming Intel Arc A140V.
The Pocket 4 comes equipped with up to 64GB of LPDDR5-7500 memory, with 16GB dedicated to the integrated Radeon 890M GPU. Storage options are equally impressive, offering up to 8TB of SSD storage (with 4TB available at launch). To keep things running smoothly, GPD has implemented a single-fan cooling system to manage heat during intense gaming sessions.
One of the most intriguing features of the Pocket 4 is its modularized connector. This allows users to swap out the rear port for various modules, including an RS-232 analog module, a KVM module, or expanded keyboard and mouse options through additional USB connectors. For those seeking even more storage or connectivity, the expansion slot can be used for an SD card slot or even an LTE modem. This level of customizability is a breath of fresh air in the gaming handheld market.
The Pocket 4 packs a 44.8Wh battery, placing it in between the 2023 ROG Ally and Legion GO in terms of battery capacity. While pricing and an exact release date are still under wraps, GPD has indicated that the Pocket 4 will be available sometime in October. We’re excited to see how this powerful and versatile handheld performs in the real world.
