Amidst the bustling Masi streets of Madurai, thousands of devotees assembled to witness the spectacular Masi Car Festival. The festival kicked off as the decorated cars carrying the presiding deities of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple embarked on their journey from ‘Thermutti.’
Crowds had gathered well before the procession began, eager to secure vantage points along East and South Masi streets. Men, women, and children dressed in their finest attire adorned the streets, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
As the towering cars made their way through the busy streets, the sun’s rays cast long shadows, providing shelter for the spectators. The procession featured a majestic elephant, followed by an array of Lord Shiva devotees adorned with matted hair, bare chests, and sacred rudraksha malas. Children dressed as Lord Shiva enthusiastically joined the procession, adding to its charm.
The rhythmic beats of drums, bugles, and cymbals filled the air, enhancing the festive spirit. Sivanadiars danced with abandon, their movements swaying to the music. For the comfort of the devotees, numerous stalls were set up along the procession route, offering refreshments and traditional delicacies.
The streets were lined with hundreds of police personnel, ensuring crowd safety and preventing unauthorized vehicles from entering the festival area. Despite the lengthy wait, the devotees remained enthusiastic, eagerly anticipating the moment when the majestic cars passed by. The Masi Car Festival served as a testament to the deep devotion and cultural heritage of Madurai, leaving a lasting impression on the hearts of all who witnessed its grandeur.
