Elwood Varty, a 61-year-old grandfather of nine, has claimed the top prize of $100,000 in the OLG Dream Draw Lotto Max draw on May 3rd. Varty, from Campbellford, Ontario, has been playing the lottery for decades, but this is his first major win. He purchased his winning ticket at RX Drug Mart on Grand Road in Campbellford.
Varty said he kept the ticket in the book he was reading and checked it after the draw. “I took it to the clerk and the lottery machine froze,” he said. “I couldn’t believe I had actually won.”
Varty’s wife was also in disbelief. “I told my wife, and she thought it was a prank,” he said. “She didn’t believe it either. This win has been amazing and life-changing.”
Varty said he plans to keep his winnings in savings for the time being. He is a father of six and has nine grandchildren.
The Dream Draws campaign ran from March 26 to May 3, and for every $5 purchase of a regular Lotto Max ticket, a Dream Draw ticket was included for a chance to win $100,000.
