Greater Newark Holiday Fund Launches Urgent #GivingTuesday Campaign to Combat Soaring Poverty and Homelessness in New Jersey
This #GivingTuesday, December 3rd, the Greater Newark Holiday Fund (GNHF) is launching a critical online fundraising campaign to address the escalating crisis of poverty and homelessness across New Jersey. For 87 years, GNHF has been a lifeline for vulnerable communities, and this year, the need is more urgent than ever. The campaign aims to raise vital funds for 11 trusted social service agencies operating across six counties: Essex, Union, Hudson, Bergen, Passaic, and Morris.
A Growing Crisis Demands Collective Action
The challenges facing New Jersey residents are stark. Food insecurity, homelessness, and the lack of access to basic necessities have reached alarming levels. Essex County, for instance, carries a staggering 15% poverty rate – one of the highest in the state. The situation is further exacerbated by a 24% statewide increase in homelessness, with a concerning 23.9% of New Jersey’s homeless population residing in Essex County alone.
Providing Essential Support Services
The GNHF campaign will directly support crucial services provided by its partner agencies. Donations will fund:
*
Food Assistance:
Providing meals and groceries to over 32,000 residents struggling with hunger.*
Warm Winter Clothing:
Ensuring thousands of families and children have adequate protection from the cold.*
Emergency Shelter:
Offering temporary safe havens for individuals seeking stability.*
Eldercare Services:
Supporting seniors to maintain their dignity and independence.*
Educational and Healthcare Support:
Providing essential resources for children’s well-being.*
Survivor Services:
Offering critical assistance to individuals impacted by violence.*
Mental Health Counseling:
Providing vital support for those managing trauma.*
Addiction Recovery Support:
Empowering individuals in their journey towards wellness.A Call to Action: Every Dollar Makes a Difference
Marie Mathews, President of GNHF, emphasizes the immediate impact of donations: “For many in Essex County, basic needs remain out of reach. Every dollar given directly helps ease these burdens, providing hope and stability to people when it’s needed most.” GNHF Board Member Anthony Azevedo adds, “Without the community’s support, hardship will continue impacting countless families across New Jersey. Whether it’s $20 or $200, every donation makes a difference this holiday season.”
The GNHF also encourages corporate partnerships, highlighting the benefits of corporate giving in boosting employee morale and fostering team unity. This collective effort is crucial in addressing the scale of the crisis.
