The Green Bay Packers enter the NFL Draft with several pressing questions surrounding their roster. General manager Brian Gutekunst has emphasized the draft’s significance, and the public eagerly awaits the team’s plans.
One key area of concern is the offensive line. The Packers have historically opted for shorter linemen, but this year’s draft boasts a number of tall tackles. Gutekunst’s stance on taller linemen remains unclear, as he hasn’t previously selected one in the first round. However, the value of these tackles may force him to consider drafting one despite potential position concerns.
The secondary is another area of scrutiny. While Xavier McKinney’s signing bolsters the safety position, the depth behind him is questionable. Anthony Johnson Jr., a seventh-rounder from last year, is projected to start, with limited talent beyond him. The Packers must decide whether their current players, under new coaching, can provide sufficient support or if additional talent is required.
At linebacker, the Packers have a need for off-ball playmakers after transitioning to a 4-3 base defense. However, this draft class lacks depth at the position. Edgerrin Cooper, the top-rated prospect, stylistically resembles Quay Walker, potentially forcing Walker to move to middle linebacker. The Packers may opt for a developmental prospect like Trevin Wallace or hope for McDuffie’s continued improvement under Jeff Hafley, his former defensive coordinator at Boston College.
The wide receiver position features depth with Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and others, making a high-end acquisition unlikely. However, the Packers could consider adding depth pieces for future flexibility, especially with Watson and Doubs approaching the end of their current contracts.
Finally, the defensive line depth has improved with recent draft selections. However, Devonte Wyatt’s performance has fallen short of expectations. Kenny Clark’s contract expires next year, and the Packers must determine whether to extend him or prioritize the defensive line in the draft.
