Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has accused Democrats of wanting former President Donald Trump dead and suggested that plans are being made to assassinate him in jail.
Greene, a staunch supporter of Trump, made the claims during an interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on Monday. She said that Trump’s ongoing legal woes show that Democrats “literally want him dead.”
Trump is currently on trial in New York City, where he has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. He is facing dozens more charges across three other criminal cases.
Greene told Jones that Trump was being targeted with “rigged trials” and an “unbelievable perversion of our justice system” before suggesting that Democrats are hoping for his death, citing a bill from Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson to strip convicted felons of Secret Service protection.
“The Democrats aren’t sorry about it … They literally want him dead,” Greene said. “Bennie Thompson introduced a bill to take away his Secret Service protection. That’s how serious they are. They want [former] President Trump dead.”
“They want to lock him up in jail for the rest of his life so that he dies in jail,” she continued. “And they want to take away his Secret Service protection so that he is murdered somewhere in jail, possibly. This is how serious they are.”
Jones made a similar prediction last year, claiming without evidence that “the deep state establishment” was planning to kill Trump. The conspiracy theorist envisioned a scenario in which “they poison [Trump] or they blow his airplane up” prior to securing the GOP nomination.
It was unclear whether Greene was claiming on Monday that Democrats had a specific plan to assassinate Trump in jail, or were hoping that he would be randomly killed by fellow prisoners without Secret Service protection.
Greene is not alone in suggesting that Thompson’s bill is designed to bring about Trump’s demise. Alan Dershowitz, a former member of Trump’s legal team, said during a television interview on Sunday that the bill “means they want him killed because he’s obviously a target.”
Dershowitz also predicted that Trump would never be sent to jail because New York State Justice Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the New York criminal trial, would view a jail sentence as “a guaranteed victory” for Trump.
Thompson’s bill, dubbed the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act—aka the DISGRACED Act—was introduced last week and co-sponsored by eight Democratic representatives. A source at Thompson’s office previously told Newsweek that the bill would apply to any convicted felon who would otherwise have Secret Service protection, adding: “Nobody should have special treatment, and that happens to include the former president.”
Greene, who is well-known for promoting conspiracy theories, has made similar claims about Democrats allegedly attempting to orchestrate Trump’s death earlier this year. The congresswoman claimed without evidence in February that President Joe Biden was attempting to put Trump “in prison for the rest of his life which would be a death sentence.”
During a town hall meeting last year, Greene seemingly approved of a call to execute Trump for “treason.” Prior to being elected to Congress in 2020, she accused then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi of being “guilty of treason,” noting that it is “a crime punishable by death.”
