Grindr Launches STI Testing Service to Tackle Stigma and Inequalities

Grindr, the popular dating app used predominantly by gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (GBTQ+) individuals, has launched a groundbreaking new service in the United Kingdom aimed at breaking down barriers and addressing inequalities in STI testing. In partnership with PrEPster at The Tove Tank, an organization promoting access to the preventive HIV medication PrEP, and Sexual Health London (SHL), Grindr has introduced a service that makes STI testing easier and more convenient.

This new initiative, which launched on May 15, 2023, enables London-based Grindr users to order free self-sampling kits directly to their homes while browsing the app. This service streamlines the process of accessing STI testing, eliminating the need for travel to clinics or scheduling appointments during clinic hours. It also tackles the perceived stigma and barriers associated with in-person STI testing, which may include fear of judgment or lack of transportation.

Grindr’s initiative comes at a crucial time, particularly in London, which currently has the highest rate of new STIs in England. According to the 2023 Online Nation report by Ofcom, Grindr reaches 924,000 adults in the UK, making it an influential platform for reaching GBTQ+ individuals and promoting sexual health.

The self-sampling service is embedded within Grindr’s interface, allowing users to remain in the app throughout the ordering process. Grindr emphasizes that it does not collect or hold any information on users who order test kits, ensuring privacy and confidentiality.

The Grindr for Equality programme, launched in 2012, aims to create an inclusive environment for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. This initiative is an extension of that programme, demonstrating Grindr’s commitment to addressing health disparities faced by GBTQ+ communities.

Grindr’s partnership with PrEPster at The Love Tank and SHL has enabled the distribution of nearly half a million test kits in Ireland, Georgia, New Zealand, and the USA. The organizations hope to roll out the programme further across the UK, depending on infrastructure and local authority support.

Steph Niaupari, from Grindr for Equality, emphasizes the importance of ensuring the safety of Grindr users in the digital realm, encouraging frequent STI testing. Dr. Will Nutland from PrEPster at The Love Tank commends the partnership, highlighting its potential to address sexual health inequalities faced by under-served groups within the LGBTQ+ community.
