The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority implemented an increase in speed limits to 80 mph on parts of the H.E. Bailey Turnpike, spanning Comanche, Caddo, and Grady counties. However, this has raised concerns regarding the safety of guardrails at these higher speeds, according to advocate Stephen Eimers.
Eimers, who lost his daughter in a guardrail-related crash in 2016, has become an advocate for road safety. He questions the adequacy of guardrail crash-testing standards, highlighting that they are not tested at the posted speeds. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) conducts guardrail testing at 62 mph, raising concerns about their effectiveness at higher speeds.
Eimers urges the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) to take his concerns seriously and advocates for changes to improve guardrail safety. The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority states that speed limits are determined based on factors such as pavement condition and traffic patterns. They have plans for maintenance projects later this summer to reconstruct shoulders and guardrails on a different section of the turnpike.
Despite the increased speed limit, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority advises motorists to remain vigilant and adjust their speed in inclement weather conditions.
