Gucci’s Rosso Ancora: A Vogue Shopping Spree in SoHo

In a world saturated with online fashion, there’s an undeniable charm in the tactile experience of trying on clothes in a physical store. This is precisely the journey I embarked on, a personal exploration into the newest collections of some of my favorite high-street and contemporary labels. This ‘Just Browsing’ experience delves into fabric, quality, fit, and feel – a comprehensive shop-floor adventure. Prepare to scroll… and stroll!

My wardrobe leans heavily towards a monochromatic palette—black, denim blues, neutrals, and the occasional burgundy. Imagine my excitement then, when Sabato De Sarno unveiled his creative direction for Gucci in September 2023, proclaiming burgundy, or “Rosso Ancora,” as the defining house hue. This rich shade isn’t just a Gucci statement; it’s the color of the season, gracing runways from Fall to Resort collections. But few brands have captured its essence quite like Gucci.

My hunt for Rosso Ancora began at the Wooster Street Gucci store in SoHo, New York. The store itself is a masterpiece, seamlessly blending the character of its 155-year-old, former pencil factory origins with De Sarno’s sleek, modern vision. The juxtaposition of exposed brick against chrome rails and display units is breathtaking, but it was the Cassina armchairs that truly stole my heart. (I wouldn’t mind owning a set!). But back to the clothes…

This shopping experience delivered a wealth of must-have items perfect for the holiday season and beyond. Let’s dive into my top picks:

The Cinched Waist: A Tailoring Triumph

The Vogue Shopping team unanimously craves fitted blazers this season. I’ve long favored oversized styles, but as someone petite, I’ve discovered how unflattering they can be. Enter shrunken, belted, and double-breasted blazers! First, a rich satin double-breasted blazer. The fit was impeccable – a perfect IT38 requiring no alterations. I styled it with slim black pants but envision it equally stunning with denim and a white tee. This is a forever blazer.

Next, a wool, belted blazer with a nostalgic feel. The tiny GG belt, high V-neck, and pocket details charmed me. Simple yet striking, a turtleneck would elevate this piece further. These two were my favorites, but Gucci’s tailoring mastery was evident in the countless jackets on offer. The mini skirts paired with many of the blazers create effortless, chic combinations.

The Jacket Dress: Effortless Cool

Pants optional? Absolutely! De Sarno’s Gucci vision is filled with mini skirts, mini dresses, and jacket dresses that exude a cool, casual, and sexy vibe. A skimming hemline paired with flat knee-high boots is pure magic. Whether an oversized coat or a fitted GG jacket, the iconic Horsebit boots add a high-low touch.

Iconic Bags Reimagined

Gucci excels at reimagining its iconic bags, and the Blondie bag is a prime example. Chic in burgundy or brown, available in leather or suede, with or without a chain strap—this bag is pure versatility. Style it with denim and a suede jacket for a nostalgic touch.

The Emblem fabric, a Gucci icon since 1933, gets a modern update in a hobo style bag. The classic fabric feels fresh and current.

The Horsebit Family: A Timeless Classic

If it has a horsebit, I’m buying it. This iconic Gucci detail evokes a timeless appeal. Even Jules, our videographer, sported a vintage Horsebit bag. The gloss burgundy riding boots are a timeless style, but my favorite find was the chocolate brown suede ballerinas. Suede is trending, and these shoes are set to be a wardrobe staple. Paired with denim, they’re the epitome of off-duty chic. The experience of browsing the new Gucci collection in its beautiful SoHo setting solidified its position as a key player in the world of luxury fashion.
