The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB) announced the results of the Class 12 examinations on May 9, 2023. The overall pass percentage this year was 82.45%, a significant increase compared to the previous year. Notably, 127 schools achieved a 100% result, while 1034 students secured A1 grade and 8983 students earned A2 grade.
Among the successful candidates were nine prisoners serving life sentences in Lajpore Central Jail in Surat. All nine students who appeared for the Class 12 exams cleared them, leading to a pass percentage of 100% for the jail. This remarkable achievement underscores the transformative power of education even in challenging environments.
Lajpore jail Superintendent Jashu Desai expressed his pride in the students’ success, stating that all nine inmates who took the exam passed. This achievement highlights the importance of providing access to education for incarcerated individuals, offering them opportunities for growth and rehabilitation.
The news of the prisoners’ success sparked diverse reactions on social media. Some users drew parallels with the jailed former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, while others praised the education system in Gujarat’s prisons. The incident also raises the question of educational disparities and the need to ensure equal access to quality education for all, regardless of their circumstances.
