Gwyneth Paltrow is facing a bittersweet transition as her son, Moses, prepares to leave the family home for college in just a few months. The actress and wellness entrepreneur, 52, recently opened up about the upcoming change and the emotions that come with it.
Paltrow, who shares Moses and his sister, Apple, 19, with ex-husband Chris Martin, has always prioritized spending quality time with her children. With Moses’s departure on the horizon, she expressed a sense of unease about how her daily life and social schedule will change.
“I’ve been so defined and so fulfilled by motherhood,” Paltrow reflected. “I don’t even know how to articulate it. It’s like the guiding force. It’s what I return to.” She explained that her social life often revolves around her kids, whether it’s spending time with Moses before he leaves or catching up with Apple when she’s home from college.
While Paltrow recognizes that her children becoming independent is a natural progression, she admits to feeling a sense of loss as her family dynamic changes. “On the one hand, incredible sadness,” she said. “On the other hand, this is exactly what should be happening. Your kids are supposed to be young adults who can achieve and cope and make connections and be resilient. That’s exactly what you want. And that means they leave the house.”
Paltrow previously spoke about the “grief” of her son leaving home, as well as her husband Brad Falchuk’s son, Brody, this September. She explained that her role as a mother has been a central part of her identity for the past 20 years, and the idea of her children leaving the nest brings a mix of emotions.
Despite her sadness, Paltrow remains proud of the young adults her children have become. She is confident that they are ready to take on the world and make their own way.
As Moses prepares to embark on this new chapter in his life, Paltrow is finding comfort in the fact that she has a strong and loving relationship with her children. She knows that they will always be there for her, even when they are no longer living under the same roof.
