Dubberley also raises a red flag about whey protein powder, a favorite among gym-goers for building muscle or losing weight. He warns that excessive consumption can disrupt the delicate balance of microbes in your gut, known as the gut microbiome.
“Overdoing it on protein powder can throw off your gut’s microbial balance,” he states. “The added sugars and flavorings in some protein powders can also disrupt blood sugar levels, further promoting harmful bacteria growth in your gut. While protein is essential for muscle repair, relying too heavily on supplements can lead to a fiber-deficient diet and poor gut health.”
Pre-workout supplements, often touted for their energy-boosting effects, also come under scrutiny from Dubberley. “Artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and caffeine in pre-workout supplements can irritate the stomachs of some individuals,” he cautions. “It’s crucial to listen to your body and adjust accordingly, as everyone’s digestive system is unique.”
However, not all supplements are created equal. Dubberley highlights creatine as a supplement with potential benefits for gut health. “Creatine is known to protect gut cells from damage that can contribute to conditions like inflammatory bowel disease,” he explains. “It can also reduce discomfort, bolster gut defenses, and prevent harmful substances from entering the bloodstream.”
