The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited applications for the post of head coach of the senior men’s team, with the deadline for submission set for May 27, 2024. The contract for the role will extend until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Amidst the BCCI’s pursuit of incumbent Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming for the role, another CSK legend, Harbhajan Singh, has hinted at applying for the coveted position. Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Harbhajan expressed his desire to take up the role for Team India, emphasizing his passion for giving back to the sport that has bestowed him with an illustrious career.
Harbhajan’s comments come as the BCCI awaits an official response from Fleming, who has reportedly expressed reluctance to commit to the role until 2027. The BCCI has outlined the qualifications for potential head coaches, including a minimum of 30 Test matches or 50 ODIs played, or a minimum of two years as head coach of a full member Test-playing nation. Alternatively, candidates may have served as head coach of an Associate Member/IPL team or equivalent international league/first-class teams/national A teams for a minimum of three years. Additionally, candidates should possess a BCCI Level 3 Certification or equivalent and be below 60 years of age.
The selection process will involve a comprehensive review of applications, followed by personal interviews and assessments of shortlisted candidates. The BCCI will be seeking an experienced and qualified individual to guide the Indian cricket team to future success.
