The legend of Hariyali Teej is deeply intertwined with the tale of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is believed that Lord Shiva accepted Parvati as his consort on this day. According to the legend, Goddess Parvati underwent 107 births in penance for Shiva. Finally, on her 108th birth, she managed to win over Lord Shiva and came to be known as ‘Teej Mata’. It is believed that Parvati married Shiva on her 108th birthday, during the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Shravan.

Parvati’s devotion and sacrifice are central to the celebration. It is said that she traveled to the Himalayas to symbolize her unwavering love and created a Shiva Lingam from the sand. Her sincere fasting and rituals moved Lord Shiva, who, in recognition of her devotion, accepted her as his wife. In her past lives, Parvati renounced worldly ties and lived on dry leaves to win Shiva’s love, yet Lord Shiva remained unaware due to his vow of celibacy.

During Hariyali Teej celebrations, women partake in various rituals and traditions to seek blessings from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for marital happiness, prosperity, and well-being. They traditionally wear green clothes and adorn themselves with green jewelry. The swinging ceremony, decorated with flowers, is a key part of the festivities.
