A Hartford man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a city resident. Yamil Rohena, 28, was sentenced Tuesday for the 2020 killing of 27-year-old Kwadir Paris. According to authorities, the shooting occurred after a dispute between Paris and his child’s mother, leading her to seek an acquaintance to confront Paris about retrieving her belongings.
The dispute escalated, resulting in Paris sustaining a gunshot wound to his buttocks. The bullet, fired from a .22-caliber handgun, caused fatal injuries after traveling through his body.
Evidence presented during the trial included surveillance footage from Hartford municipal cameras and private residences, which captured the shooting and Rohena fleeing the scene. Additionally, witnesses identified Rohena as the perpetrator.
In a separate proceeding, Rohena was also convicted of criminal possession of a firearm and violating his probation from a 2017 first-degree assault conviction.
State’s Attorney Sharmese L. Walcott praised the prosecution team’s efforts in bringing the case to justice. She emphasized the lasting impact that violent crime has on communities and the need for the justice system to address these consequences.
